How can you tell which signs or planets are dominant in your birthchart?
I’ve read that any planet in your First House is dominant, but the only thing in my First House is my Ascendent in Libra. I don’t know what an Ascendent is.

My second house Scorpio (which I think means Rising signs?) contains Mars and Pluto and my third house, Sagittarius (which is also my Sun Sign) contains four planets: Mercury, the Sun, Saturn and Uranus. I read that if a House contains a lot of planets then that house is also dominant? I don’t know.

The planet that rules the sign on the Ascendant, first house cusp, is said to be the chart ruler. This planet is said to set the general tenor of the horoscope, as well as give insight into the native’s general motivations, modes of functioning and manner of handling situations.

So in this case Libra is on the 1st house cusp. Venus rules Libra and would be the chart ruler. People with Venus as their chart ruler are geared toward refinement. They like their surroundings to be beautiful and their relationships to be harmonious. They may be too compromising with others. The placement of Venus in the natus will indicate how this further is expressed.

Dominant planets are usually those that have a powerful influence in a chart. Planets in the signs and houses they rule are often very powerful in the chart, unless otherwise afflicted. A house that is heavily tenanted can also dominate the horoscope, in as much as the native is likely to be heavily interested in the affairs it relates to.

Welcome to the world of astrology… from a geometrical point of view, the ascendant can be described as the zodiacal sign and degree that was ascending on the eastern horizon at the specific time and location of an event; in this particular case, your birth. Here is a link to explain briefly its astrological meaning:

http://www.cafeastrology.com/risingsignsascendant.html

By second house Scorpio, you mean that Scorpio is in the cusp of the second house in your chart. To know what the ascendant is (ascendant and rising sign are synonyms), look for the sign on the first house’s cusp – you already mentioned it’s Libra, just helping you with the terminology.

There are several ways in which a planet’s strength is categorized. Any planet that is in conjunction to a sensitive point in the chart (Ascendant, Midheaven, IC and Descendant) has additional strength. The house it occupies also plays a role, for planets in angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th) are stronger than if placed in the other houses (when this aspect is considered in isolation). The decreasing order of strength a type of house attributes to a planet is the following: angular, succedent, cadent. The number, importance and closeness of aspects a planet makes needs to be considered too; also, the sign in which the planet is placed contributes to it. Certain placements are considered to be “exaltation”, others “detriment”. In particular chart configurations, when a planet is isolated from clusters of others, the singleton is usually a strong planet.

As far as sign strength goes, the number of planets in that sign, taken into account with the strength of each of those planets, help us get a good idea about it. You’re correct about the dominant house notion.

If you’re more interested in your particular chart than in actually learning the generic notions for this, you can have the work done easily. Go to astro.com, make an account and when you have your birth data introduced, choose free horoscopes -> extended chart selection -> Method Pullen/Astrolog -> Simple Chart Delineation by Walter Pullen (with as many additional objects selected as possible, for a more accurate result)… then it’s just scrolling down for the information you’re seeking. Feel free to play around with the different types of chart, too.

Why not go to astro and get your free chart, then use their interactive model to get an explanation, then go to cafeastrology and do the same, but do *not* use their charts as they inferior. Then read about my background from my homepage by clicking on my avatar here.

Posting Natal Chart Data v Natal Chart Pictures?

This slide shows the meanings of the planets

this slide shows the house meanings, natural house rulers and notice the compass points are reversed? this is not a mistake

You have to accept we are ALL multifaceted human beings and what astrology does is break things down, compartmentalises things into smaller chunks for you to digest. These chunks are called mathematical aspects these 10 planets make to each other. This is the *meat and bones* of astrology. Just remember planets are modified by signs, where they express are houses and how they express are *aspects* Planets to not act alone as if stranded on a desolate island, they interact and express as modified energies. For me astrology is a form of psychology, a way to help you understand you, your motivations and ways of thinking/feeling In future please consider posting a chart rather than just little bits and pieces of it

Whilst the whole chart needs to be taken into consideration, if this is the level you can manage or understand now, that’s ok. Just keep asking questions and that way the ‘whole’ chart will someday make much more sense. Everyone has to start somewhere and I applaud and encourage you for taking those baby steps.
